Today we will learn how to enable usb tethering from your Android device to macbook.
In this case I'm using a macbook pro mid 2010 model. It is running mac os 10.10 Yosemite.
There isn't any out of the box Android usb support for Mac os running Yosemite, although iphone might work but I've not tried as I don't have an iPhone.
The wifi on this device is busted and the usb wifi gives crappy internet speed for larger downloads. So my best bet is to use internet via USB tethering.
Upon research I came to know about a software called ho rndis. Don't download it's latest version as it won't support Yosemite. Download it's version from 2013. I'll leave a link which worked for me here
2) Once downloaded open the package it will tell mac os doesn't allow untrusted apps. It's okay.
3) Go to mac os system preferences ---> security & privacy ---> general ---> allow apps downloaded from ---> click allow and the software should pop up automatically.
4) Now install the software and follow steps by clicking next and following the on-screen steps. After the last step click close and open the app from launchpad.
5) Connect usb and enable usb tethering now it should detect the connection.
6) Turn your wifi off and try browsing, consequently you can also check by going into system preferences and then network it should say connected Android.
Disclaimer:- some devices might not work like i checked with my Asus Zenfone Max pro m1 and it didn't work but when I checked with my redmi k50i phone it worked like a charm. Also checked with mipad and it worked with no errors.
If your software or website requires particular wifi connection or ethernet to be seen then there might be some issues, like when I ran speedtest.net it was not able to find any server but YouTube ran without any issues.
If your device is not working please then stick to ethernet or crappy usb wifi.
Hope this guide helps you in enabling internet on your macbook. A big thank you for open source developer Joshua Wise, who made this possible.
These tutorials are mere ways to keep myself ready when I'm stuck in a situation for which I might not find reliable guide so I can come back again and review as I've personally tried and tested these methods.
No ai or chatgpt was used in the production of this tutorial. Everything was first tested thoroughly and then written to avoid any issues.
Good day.
